Hi Plaid, Thanks for sharing your experience with us. I would like to explain that different problems have different causes, we need to different solutions to resolve them. And in many cases, the same symptom may be caused by different factors. We can't confirm that we can use the same solution to resolve every problem that exhibits the same symptom. Since every user has different environments and they are under different situations, we need to troubleshoot and investigate case by case.
Welcome to /r/OneNote!This subreddit is dedicated to the discussion of the popular note-taking and organization software published by Microsoft. Pertinent stories, updates, or questions are always welcome here. Many students use OneNote for academics, but you can also take advantage of it for work or personal projects. Use OneNote with other programs in the Office suite, on your desktop or mobile devices. These easy steps will help you get started quickly even if you are a complete beginner.
Therefore, I would suggest we focus on the problem you are encountering currently so that we can handle your case properly, could you help provide the information below for a better understanding of your situation and investigation?. A screenshot of the error message. The detailed steps you perform before the error appears. Your OneNote version from OneNote menu About OneNote. Does the issue happen to one specific notebook or all notebooks?. Where is your notebook stored and have you shared with anyone else?
Besides, here is an article that may help: Regards, Joanne. Thanks for the reply, Joanne. Please note from my post that there are multiple errors. I will attach screenshots, here, of as many of those images as possible. Please know that these images represent errors encountered on three different Macintosh computers with which I use OneNote.
The following error does NOT resolve after using the 'Sign in' link to the right: b. It presents this error. Then, after pressing 'OK,' presents this error. At the top of the OneNote window is this sync error: e. And, when you use the 'Sync' button, here, at the top right, it says this. Then, after seemingly completing a successful sync, goes back to this.
Wash, rinse, repeat. This cycle continues, indefinitely. Currently on 15.36 (several articles suggested older versions were not susceptible to the sync error issues, so I tried that a couple of times; it didn't work; I went back to latest version weeks ago; same errors persist. Per my original post: 'across multiple live ID's' - this is happening to all notebooks, across multiple live ID's. Well, I have not shared my notebooks with anyone, but as to the first question - 'Where are your notebooks stored?' I'm not sure what you mean by 'where is my notebook stored' - there are some possible answers here:. One, you could be referring to the 'Containers' folder where Microsoft hides the user content on a Mac hard disk.
But, since this is entry level tech support, I'm going to assume that can't be what we're talking about, here. Two, you are asking where OneNote, a cloud-based notebook service, stores the notebook content. The obvious answer there would be - Microsoft's OneNote cloud storage space - again, the full answer would be a secret only Microsoft knows, but I can't imagine that is what you would be asking, nor why you would be asking that. Three, you could be asking me what kind of drive I'm using on my computers - the answer there would be both SATA3 SSD's and 7200RPM SATA mechanical drives, but I don't see how that helps us, either, as those come pre-installed on every buyers Mac Pro, iMac, and MacBook Pro machines.
You'll have to be a little more specific on that last one, I'm afraid, but, no, I do not share content from those accounts. It seems like we have no solution.
Unless there is some sort of broken sharing structure, which Microsoft attempted to employ in the coding of OneNote, when using multiple Live ID's. That would be a good starting place, I imagine. In other words, because I have my work, school, and personal OneDrive, OneNote, Office365 and various other MS software logins functioning simultaneously, perhaps OneNote is attempting to create a sharing structure, whereby I am allowed to edit notebook content belonging to one of my user accounts using an unprivileged account, and as a result, breaking the synchronization structure. This would be a nightmare to correct, methinks. See, I cannot just delete all of my OneNote content in the middle of drafting a dissertation for my PhD, starting a new job as an adjunct professor at the university, and holding down a weekend part-time job with another organization, when ALL of my notes for each of those environments are in OneNote.
Thank you for the article link, as well. I have read that particular article several times over the last three months that this has been happening, and I attempted to do the reset and move all of my sections and pages to new notebooks, but it did not work. I've also read about two dozen other articles on Microsoft's help and support forum, and tried their solutions. None of which worked longer than about five minutes, at best. Most of those suggestions produced nothing at all to resolve the situation. I wish I could make this all my fault, so it could go away.:-( UPDATE: This is now happening on Microsoft Word and Excel, as well.
It does appear to be a sharing issue. Edits have been made to numerous files using a different Live ID than the one from which the file originated. Microsoft has done it again. Someone needs to figure out how to give administrative rights to multiple users for Office application files. That's the only way to resolve this in a realistic amount of time. We all have jobs and responsibilities - spending hours fixing Microsoft's mistakes does not make you a credible business software maker. I can't rebuild every Office document and OneNote notebook I've ever created, and Microsoft knows it.
Something tells me the reply to this is not going to be helpful at all. Grace and peace, Jeff. Hi Plaid, Thanks for sharing the information. Regarding you mentioned that 'this is now happening on Microsoft Word and Excel', it seems you are encountering a different issue. To let us handle this case properly, I would suggest we focus on the OneNote sync issue here. Please post the problem you are encountering in Word and Excel in a new thread.
A new thread is opened to avoid the confusion and let other users in this forum refer to information clearly as well as effectively. Our engineer will continue assisting you on the second problem. For the OneNote sync error, you can try the following steps to see if it works: 1.Open your OneNote app, on the top menu bar, click OneNote Sign Out. 2.Click FileSelect Close This Notebook to close all the notebooks. 3.Sign into OneNote app again and go to File Open Notebook to open the notebooks in your OneDrive or OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online locations.
If the steps above can't help, I would like to confirm some information for investigation: 1. Does it exhibit same behavior (the error you mentioned above) for OneNote on your three computers? Are the notebooks stored on your OneDrive for personal, OneDrive for Business or SharePoint Online library? Or the notebooks stored on these locations have the same issue? The Mac OS version build of your three computers. Regarding this issue happen for recent months, what settings did you changed to your network, OneNote or your Mac before the issue happened? Does the issue happen to previous OneNote version, for example, 15.36 and so on?
For your reference: 5. Change to another network environment(If you sync the notebook in your Office, you may sync it at home to see the outcome) to see if it works. Meanwhile, we have received several reports about the issue recently and have set a primary thread for the issue. If there is any update, we will post in it. We suggest you subscribe the primary thread and monitor the progress of the issue in it.
Regards, Joanne.
